About me:

Hi, I’m Marco. I’m from Quito, Ecuador, and I’ve spent many years studying and teaching languages.
Besides Spanish, my native language, I also speak Portuguese, French, Italian, English, and Kichwa—an indigenous language spoken in the Andes. I’ve taught Spanish, Portuguese, and courses on literature and culture to undergraduate students, from beginner to advanced levels.

After completing my undergraduate studies in Art History and Hispanic Literature, I earned a master’s degree in Literary Studies in Curitiba, Brazil, with a focus on bilingualism and translation. I then spent seven years in Chicago, where I completed a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese Studies. My research centers on the intersections of language, culture, and literature. During my master’s and doctoral studies, I examined the bilingualism of Latin American writers living in France—particularly Paris—at the turn of the century. My work examines how bilingual writers (Spanish-French or Portuguese-French) navigated multiple cultural traditions and how this shaped their reception within national literary canons.

As a language tutor, I draw on a diverse range of experiences, from teaching languages, literature, and culture to undergraduate students, to working as a translator in Spanish, Portuguese, and French. I also spent several years working in an art gallery and as a style editor at a journal in Quito. These experiences have given me a distinctive perspective on cultural expression and storytelling.
